Visiting Author, Beth Webb on World Book Day 2009

The Library is a “hub of learning” at the College and Library staff work alongside teaching colleagues to help students further develop the skills required for effective learning.

LIBRARY RESOURCES

  • As well as books covering all the curriculum topics offered by the College, there is an eclectic selection of books on a range of hobbies and interests. Reading is (or should be!) a pleasure, so in addition to established favourites, the Library also has an excellent selection of up to date teenage fiction and can even provide students with a relaxed seating area to unwind with a good book for ten minutes!
  • The Library also boasts an extensive careers information section, a collection of local interest books and a variety of CDs and DVDs. Altogether, there are over 11,000 resources, the vast majority of which may be borrowed.
  • National and local newspapers, together with an assortment of magazines are always on hand.

IT PROVISION

Thirty fully networked computers are available for class or individual use.

INDUCTION

Students automatically become members of the Library when they join the College.  In their first few weeks, students in Year 9 will visit the Library for an induction lesson. This is an opportunity for them to find out where to find all the various resources and for us to explain the lending rules and behaviour expectations. Again, during their first half term in Year 9, all students visit the Library with their Tutor Groups as part of their ‘Study Skills Programme.’

LIBRARY ACCESS

The Library is open all day from 8.30am—4.30pm (4.00pm on Fridays) for homework, research, independent study, borrowing and, of course, reading.

At break time and lunchtime the Library is open to everyone and the computers are available on a ‘first come – first served’ basis although priority is always given to students who need to use a computer for their College work. Playing online games is not allowed.

During lesson time teachers may bring their whole class to work in the Library or they be sent to the Library on their own, or in a small group (with written permission from a teacher) to work independently.  The Library is managed by Mrs Sue Bulpin assisted by Mrs Jo Crossman who are always available to supervise and to help students find any information they need.   Please do not hesitate to contact them if you have any queries or require any further information.
