Engineering

KEY STAGE 3

Students in Year 9 study all five aspects of Design Technology.  Two lessons per week are used to deliver Design Technology over a period of seven weeks on rotation.

KEY STAGE FOUR

Engineering Double Award GCSE

This is a new course designed to enable those with an interest in a wide range of engineering activities to attain a Double GCSE Award.  Although this is a Double GCSE Award, it will be taught in a single option block.  This means that the work rate will be higher than usual, and the course will be best suited to students who have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in engineering and a willingness to explore, develop and communicate new ideas.

Students can expect to combine classroom learning with practical activity and project work as they develop both their design and practical skills.  Much of the course will be taught through practical assignments.  Product studies and workplace visits are also an important aspect of the course.

The assessment for the course is based on two units of internally assessed coursework and an external examination.

  • Unit 1: Design and Graphical Communication - Developing a design solution to a client's brief (worth one third of the overall marks)
  • Unit 2: Engineered Products - Using drawings and a product specification to manufacture an engineered product (worth one third of the overall marks)
  • Unit 3: Application of Technology - A one and a half hour exam in preparation for which students will investigate the impact of modern technology on the manufacture of a wide range of products from various sectors of engineering

 SIXTH FORM

OCR have released a new version of their Product Design A Level specification for first teaching in September 2008. This course can be covered from a range of material areas which include all of our GCSE specifications.

Over the past few years this course has been very successful with a 100% pass rate.
