Science

The Science Team consists of a Curriculum Team Leader who currently is also the Subject Leader for Physics.  There are also Subject Leaders for Biology and Chemistry;  a Key Stage 4 Co-ordinator and a Teaching and Learning Coach also support the team. In addition the team also has nine full and part-time colleagues. The Science Team is supported by a team of six technical support staff.

The College possesses the best teaching facilities in the county.  In April 2001 an extensive refurbishment and building programme was completed. The Science Team has at its disposal eleven teaching laboratories; two preparation rooms, a student ICT resource centre and a staff work area.  All teaching areas are connected to the College ICT network, allowing easy access to teaching software and the Internet.  All teaching areas are equipped with data projectors.

The aim of the Science Team is to provide a range of courses and opportunities, which reflect the diverse range of needs and aspirations of our student population.  Year 9 students have started to follow the OCR Gateway Science Suite and the majority of students will expect to achieve two or three passes at GCSE. A small group of students will follow the OCR Science Plus Certificate of Achievement course with the expectation of also completing the Science Core GCSE course.

The Team expects to offer the BTEC First Certificate in Applied Science from September 2008.  A’ Level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered to post 16 students.

The College also benefits from having a Farm Unit, which offers a range of land-based and animal care qualifications.
