Maths

Mathematics is one of the most powerful subjects in the curriculum, providing a range of skills that enable other areas of the curriculum to be understood and explained.

We endeavour to develop in all students:

·        an ability to think clearly and logically in Mathematics with confidence, independence of thought and flexibility of mind

·        an understanding of Mathematics through a process of enquiry and experiment

·        an appreciation of Mathematical structures and patterns and the ability to identify relationships

·        persistence through a sustained piece of work which requires perseverance, working both  co-operatively and independently

·        an awareness of problem solving strategies

·        a confidence in Mathematics which will allow students to express ideas fluently, talk about the subject with some assurance and use the language of Mathematics

·        an awareness of the inherent elegance and fascination of Mathematics

In meeting these aims we are setting expectations of students that allow them to achieve at levels appropriate to their ability.  In doing so we are also encouraging them to have high expectations of themselves.  Putting this into practice provides a healthy challenge and the emerging results speak for themselves.

The team is housed in purpose built accommodation (completed in Summer 2002), with a dedicated Maths computer area.  There are digital projectors in all rooms and two rooms also have Interactive Whiteboards.

Students are given the opportunities to develop their thinking skills and appreciation of the uses and importance of Maths in life beyond school.  They are encouraged to satisfy their curiosity and to use their creative abilities, fostering a positive attitude to Mathematics.

As a team we are meeting these aims and at the same time producing excellent results.

We are now reaping the benefits of our early entry GCSE scheme – our best Year 11 students are studying AS Maths.  At Key Stage 4 almost the entire cohort are entered for examinations and we are looking at alternative provision for those students unable to fully access the work at GCSE.

We follow the Edexcel Linear course for GCSE.  At A level, we follow the AQA course, with the D1 and S1 modules to supplement the four Core modules. Further Maths is also offered in Years 12 and 13.
