Welcome to what is termed ‘Enrichment Studies’ (ES) on the timetable but which is, in fact, an umbrella term for a collection of statutory and non-statutory subjects that all State-funded schools must deliver.
As with other subjects, the ES Department promotes the aims of the new secondary curriculum to enable all young people to become:

Citizenship is compulsory in key stages 3 and 4 (from ages 11 to 16). Citizenship is not assessed through national curriculum tests. All schools, however, are required to report pupils' attainment levels to parents at the end of year 9.

RE should be provided as part of the basic curriculum for all pupils attending a State school. (Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of RE and do not have to give their reasons for withdrawal);
Key Stage 3: 45 hours per year
Key Stage 4: 5% of total curriculum time
Why? The aims of RE are to develop pupils' knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, as the predominant religion in Great Britain, and the other principal religions represented in the country; to encourage respect for those holding different beliefs; and to help promote pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural and mental development.
