Enrichment Studies

Year 11 Magistrates Court Visit: 2009

Welcome to what is termed ‘Enrichment Studies’ (ES) on the timetable but which is, in fact, an umbrella term for a collection of statutory and non-statutory subjects that all State-funded schools must deliver.

As with other subjects, the ES Department promotes the aims of the new secondary curriculum to enable all young people to become:

  • successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve
  • confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives
  • responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

ES plays a crucial role in the delivery of the Secondary curriculum in these respects:

Citizenship

Citizenship is compulsory in key stages 3 and 4 (from ages 11 to 16). Citizenship is not assessed through national curriculum tests. All schools, however, are required to report pupils' attainment levels to parents at the end of year 9.

RE

RE should be provided as part of the basic curriculum for all pupils attending a State school. (Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of RE and do not have to give their reasons for withdrawal);

Key Stage 3: 45 hours per year

Key Stage 4: 5% of total curriculum time

Why? The aims of RE are to develop pupils' knowledge, understanding and awareness of Christianity, as the predominant religion in Great Britain, and the other principal religions represented in the country; to encourage respect for those holding different beliefs; and to help promote pupils' spiritual, moral, cultural and mental development.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education

PSHE is non-statutory in Secondary Schools but is part of the National Curriculum Guidance. The key themes are:

  • Sex and relationships education
  • Drug education (including alcohol and tobacco)
  • Physical, spiritual and emotional well-being
  • Economic well-being and financial capability
